Small Changes, Big Impact: Simple Ways to Keep Your Dog Fit and Healthy from Dr. Ben Brown

October 9th  is Pet Obesity Awareness Day and it’s the perfect time to spotlight the health and happiness of our furry friends. To help spread the word, we turned to our trusted expert, Dr. Ben Brown from Sydney Animal Hospitals Northern Beaches, Avalon Veterinary Hospital. He’s here to share his insights on recognising the signs of overweight dogs and simple tips to keep them fit and healthy.

As a veterinarian, I frequently witness the consequences of obesity in our canine companions. Recognising the signs that your dog may be overweight is vital for their overall well-being, influencing everything from their energy levels to their lifespan. It’s essential to be aware of these key indicators, as they can aid in injury and disease prevention while helping maintain your dog’s health. Here are five signs to look out for:

  1. Difficulty in Feeling Ribs: If you can’t easily feel your dog’s ribs without pressing, they might be overweight. A healthy dog should have ribs that are palpable without excess fat covering.
  2. Lack of a Defined Waist: When viewed from above, your dog should have a noticeable waistline. If their body appears more oval than hourglass, they may be carrying extra weight.
  3. Reduced Energy Levels: If your dog seems lethargic or less enthusiastic about play and walks, it could indicate that excess weight is affecting their energy levels.
  4. Shortness of Breath: Overweight dogs may experience difficulty breathing or excessive panting during normal activities, signaling that their weight is impacting their health.
  5. Joint Issues: If your dog is limping or showing signs of discomfort, especially in their hips or knees, it could be related to excess weight straining their joints.

Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for your dog’s overall well-being. Excess weight can lead to a host of health issues, including joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes. By implementing simple strategies, you can help your dog lead a happier and healthier life. GHere are my top 5 tips:

1. Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, tailored to your dog's breed and age. Activities can include:

    • Walks: A daily stroll provides exercise and mental stimulation.
    • Fetch: This fun game helps burn off energy and strengthens your bond.
    • Swimming: A fantastic low-impact exercise many dogs enjoy.
    • Agility Training: Create a mini obstacle course for an engaging workout.

* Try our hands free Clip-It Lead for hands free walks and runs, and our Walkie Belt to carry all your essentials like Pick-up Bags, phone, keys and treats!

2. Interactive Play: Engage your dog in activities that stimulate both their mind and body. Consider:

    • Tug Ropes: A great way to encourage physical activity while bonding.

* Try our new and improved Fetchables - including the our fave Fetch & Tug Ball

3. Balanced Diet: Ensure your dog is on a high-quality diet suitable for their age, size, and activity level. I recommend consulting your veterinarian for specific dietary advice to keep your pup healthy.

4. Portion Control: Be mindful of portion sizes to prevent overfeeding:

    • Measure Meals: Instead of free-feeding, accurately measure your dog’s food and treat portions to maintain a healthy calorie count.
    • Limit Treats: Treats should make up only about 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake.

5. Regular Vet Check-Ups: Schedule routine veterinary visits to monitor your dog's weight and overall health. Your veterinarian can provide tailored advice and check for any underlying health issues that may affect your dog’s weight.

By being proactive and implementing these strategies, you can significantly improve your dog’s health and quality of life. Remember, keeping your furry friend fit is not just about aesthetics; it’s about ensuring they live a long, healthy, and active life.

This October and November, Dr. Ben Brown is proud to offer free skin cancer and lump checks for dogs, a vital initiative, especially for our beach-loving companions who are often exposed to the sun. This program has already made a significant impact, with a few dogs' lives saved by identifying cancerous lumps during the first week alone. To further support this cause, Avalon Veterinary Hospital are donating 5% of each lump removal to Assistance Dogs Australia, ensuring that our efforts not only help pets but also benefit those in need. It’s an all-around fantastic initiative, and the more pets we can get checked, the better! To book your free check-up, visit this link.
